Ibadan polo begins

The 2016 edition of the Ibadan International Polo Tournament will begin on Tuesday with Kano, Lagos and Ibadan presenting teams to compete for honours.
Captain of the Ibadan Polo Club, Konyinsola Owoeye, said, “The tournament will feature over 16 teams, among them the Lagos Polo Club, Kano Polo Club and the host, Ibadan Polo Club. The teams will battle for three major trophies, which are Ibadan Cup for handicap +8 to +12, Brig. Gen. Rotimi Cup for handicap +3 to +7 and the Ade Alakija Memorial Cup for players in the -2 to +2 category.”
Owoeye added that in the special selected category, five trophies would also be contested. They are Senator Ajimobi Cup, Prof. Jide Owoeye Cup, HST Cup and Shoreline Cup.
The captain said based on historical facts at the 30-year-old tournament and the status of the teams and players featuring in this edition, this year’s tournament would be a tough contest. Among the highly rated players expected are Ahmed Umar (+3), Hamisu Buba (+3), Bashir Dantata (+3), Jubril Ali (+2) and Isa Kwame (+3).
Apart from the hosts, Lagos and Kano teams of Lead City Group, Lagos Caverton, Kano Susplan, Lagos Lekki and Ibadan Leobiga-Heirs will also contest for honours at the tournament which will end on January 31.
